Ingredients

Dry Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour to give structure and lightness
  • 2 tbsp black cocoa powder for that deep, dark chocolate flavor
  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder enhancing the chocolate richness
  • 1 tsp baking powder to help the cake rise
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda for additional leavening
  • 1/2 tsp salt to balance the sweetness

Wet Ingredients

  • 1 cup buttermilk adding creaminess and tang
  • 1 cup granulated sugar for sweetness and moisture
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened to create a rich mouthfeel
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil for added moisture and tenderness
  • 2 large eggs binding and enriching the batter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract adding a sweet, aromatic touch
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar activating the baking soda
  • Black food coloring gel or paste for a dramatic shade

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • In a large mixing bowl, sift together the all-purpose flour, black cocoa powder, unsweetened cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In another bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, granulated sugar, vegetable oil, softened unsalted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and white vinegar until smooth.
  • Add a few drops of black food coloring to the wet mixture and stir until completely incorporated.
  • Gradually fold the dry ingredients into the wet mixture until just combined.

Baking

  • Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans and bake for 30-35 minutes.
  • Check for doneness with a toothpick; it should come out clean or with a few moist crumbs clinging to it.
  • Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.

Serving

  • Frost with your choice of frosting and enjoy!

Notes

Tips for success include ensuring your ingredients are at room temperature and not overmixing the batter. For a healthier version, use whole wheat flour or substitute applesauce for butter.
